Light Adjusted Lenses (LAL)

The First And Only Lens That Can Be Customized After Cataract Surgery

What Are Astigmatism Correcting Lenses (Toric Lenses)?

Astigmatism correcting lenses, also known as Toric lenses, are a type of Intraocular lens (IOL) specifically designed to correct astigmatism. These lenses are implanted in your eye during cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange to replace your eye’s natural lens. Unlike regular IOLs, Toric lenses have different powers in the two different meridians of the lens to correct the uneven curvature of the cornea that causes astigmatism. Think of the shape of a football (astigmatism) compared to a basketball.

How the Light Adjustable
Lens works

After your surgery, you will have a follow-up appointment to assess your vision. This helps determine the best adjustment for optimal results. Your eyes will be dilated, and the focus of the lens adjusted using the Light Delivery Device. The adjustment process involves directing ultraviolet (UV) light into the IOL in your eye for about 90-seconds.

In the following days, you may choose to wear protective glasses. You can test your vision as you normally would. Take note of what you like or dislike about your vision. You can repeat the adjustment process up to 3 times until you’re satisfied, although twice is best. Once you’re happy with the results, the surgeon will “lock in” your customized vision over two visits.

How Toric Lens Work

Astigmatism occurs when the cornea or lens of the eye is irregularly shaped, causing blurred or distorted vision. Toric lenses are uniquely designed with varying optical powers and focal lengths, oriented in a specific manner to counteract the asymmetry of the cornea. This helps focus light more precisely onto the retina, providing clearer and sharper vision.

The Procedure
- What to Expect

  1. You have cataract surgery in the usual way, except the intraocular lens (IOL) inserted is the Light Adjustable Lens.
  2. You go home and let your eyes stabilize before we make the adjustments together. Typically, we start making adjustments three weeks after surgery, but it can start later.
  3. The FDA recommends you wear the UV protection glasses we give you at all times However, this is not essential with current LAL models.
  4. You may experience rose tinted vision after the adjustments.

Benefits of Toric Lenses

Improved Vision Quality: Toric lenses significantly improve vision quality by correcting both cataracts and astigmatism simultaneously.

Reduced Dependence on Glasses: Many patients experience reduced dependence on glasses or contact lenses for distance vision after surgery.

Customized Correction: Toric lenses are customized to your eye’s specific measurements, ensuring optimal correction of astigmatism.

Why Choose Toric Lenses?

Choosing Toric lenses can provide you with clearer, sharper vision and a more vibrant view of the world. They are particularly beneficial for individuals with significant astigmatism, as traditional IOLs might not address this condition adequately.

With Toric lenses, you have the opportunity to achieve better vision quality and reduce your reliance on corrective eyewear, enhancing your overall quality of life.
